According to This Old House's October 2007 issue, you can save quite a chunk of change if you open shutters or other window coverings during the day, then close them at night during the cooler months.
For instance, you can reduce your heating bill by 10 percent by opening your window shutters during the day, then closing at night. You can also save 33 percent on your cooling bill during the warm months by blocking out those scortching rays during the day.
